Back on Feb 7 my oven did a bad thing involving apparently melting components and much acrid smoke. I've been putting off chasing up the warranty and repairs etc because I knew it would be A Pain, so I sealed the crime scene and waited to get better so I could face the music.

It's not as if there's not better ways to suggest it: "It would be a good idea if the oven got switched off at the mains"

This is the sort of thing that passive voice is for.

Indeed.
Never did understand either side of that particular example of sexism. I like being able to more-or-less look after myself (although delegating has its place), and I don't see the point in letting the other side have all the fun. Bah humbug.

Well, they could be talking to someone who would have difficulty for various reasons. They don't know. So no matter what the gender of the person they are speaking to the passive voice would be safer. But that's just what I think.

And yes, rabbit1080 is much handier with a power drill than I am.
