The only downside of having a dog...

Aug 20, 2009 16:08

I think everybody who knows me knows this: I am dog crazy. When I was in undergrad and couldn't keep a dog in my dorm, I walked dogs as a volunteer at the local shelter, just so I could get that fix of canine sweetness.* Much more embarrassingly - oh, this almost hurts to admit out loud - occasionally? When I went on long walks at night through the ( Read more... )

I haven't had to look for somewhere to rent since we've gotten our dog, but I totally understand. My bff has a ton of animals & always had to find a place that had very flexible pet policies. I think at her last place before buying a house she had three dogs (all big breeds), two cats and a few ferrets. She always seemed to find places, though, so I'm sure you will, too :)

I keep consoling myself with the thought that we've always managed before...it's just a long slog. But! Definitely worth all the hassle.

Am totally with you - that is our biggest problem too. We've got a JRT, 7 years old, and he is a sweetie. Perfectly house-trained and sleeps for the majority of the day...

We are looking to move too and to be honest, a lot of the agents are very understanding and quite sweet about saying the landlord won't allow a dog. Can't wait to win the Euromillions tomorrow night so I can buy my cottage by the sea.

Ohhhh, you and me both! It would be SO great to just be able to buy a house!

At least we just got a phone call back from one of the very nicest agents saying she had just phoned up the landlord and he'd decided a dog would be okay. Score! So now we have two houses to look at...and I'm trying to take it as a positive omen! ;)

Good luck with your search!

Thank you! We've just found a second option to also look at, so knock on wood for us... *hugs*

Oh, yay for second options! I'm so sure you'll find a wonderful place.

It's even horrible in LA with just one cat. They will always pick an applicant without a pet over you, even on the rare chance that they allow them at all.

One apartment even asked me if I'd consider getting rid of my cat!!!

I actually yelled at them and stormed off the property. In retrospect, I wish I'd yelled longer. :)

GOOD LUCK and keep us updated on the hunt!

OMG. That is awful! I once had a townhouse landlord in Pittsburgh say that pets were fine, but we'd simply need to sign an agreement that if anyone ever complained about our dog, even once and for any reason, he could send in a representative to "collect" her and give her to the pound! Needless to say, we didn't move into that townhouse...!

I am doing through a similar experience with my cats and apartment hunting. I love dogs too, I wish I could own one (I will the second I get a house) but looking for an apartment with a dog would be practically impossible.

Oh, househunting with pets is so hard! And I totally hear you on the dog/apartment issue. It is possible, but it's REALLY hard!

The easiest time I've ever had was when we moved to Jacksonville. Since there are two dog tracks in town, landlords were pretty familiar with how calm and non-destructive retired racing greyhounds tend to be. It meant we were able to rent our top place. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Oh, that is interesting - I'd never thought about that positive side-effect of living near the dog tracks! Thanks for the good wishes - we can definitely use them!
