Thai food and TV rationalizations

Wow. It's a rare weekend when I'm actually bitter-conning over two different places at once - but last weekend definitely qualified. Tons of friends at WorldCon in Montreal, mmmm; tons of other friends at the SCBWI conference in LA, sighhh...yup, there was lots & lots of bittercon around this neighborhood ( Read more... )

I only barely cringed at the "romantic" line, as the hero is finally drawing the heroine into his arms: "I held you in my arms when you were three weeks old..."

Ah, Mr. Knightly....that line always has had a high squick factor....

Ohhh, yeah...as I watched, I kept telling myself "he could have been only 8 or 9 when she was born"...but I very firmly restrained myself from going back to the book to check! Really, I didn't want to know the truth...

Ohhhh, yeah. Really, the amazing thing was how romantic the ending was despite that factor!

I know! I LOVED her in Much Ado About Nothing and Cold Comfort Farm, and I loved her again in this...but then came Underworld, and nothing's quite been the same ever since...

I managed to convince myself, though, that using my baby-free time on Sunday to watch the 1990s BBC version of "Emma" (starring Kate Beckinsale) wasn't being lazy - it was doing research! Yeah! This is where it really helps to be writing Regency novels. I LOVE having justification to watch Austen films!

Yes! Exactly. :) I do this often. Also gives me an excuse to watch Charlie Hunnam in Nicholas Nickleby on repeat (yeah, more Victorian, but whatev! He's still hot & looks like my MC) ;-)

This sounds like the PERFECT rationalization to me! ;)

great for learning about human character

I like that! And it could justify many a cafe-and-people-watching hour, too...

Ooh, it's such a useful justification for SO MANY THINGS as a writer... ;)

I have a thing for Mark Strong anyhow, so I know whereof you speak. Still, I favor Jeremy Northam in the role of Mr. Knightley.

I thought Jeremy Northam was fabulous as Mr. Knightley - really perfect - but the combination of Gwyneth Paltrow (whom I've actually loved in other movies - but wow, between her terrible attempt at a British accent in this one [and again, she's done great British accents in other films, but wow, not this one...] and her unexpectedly bad acting, I thought she was pretty disastrous as Emma) and a bad script & direction meant that the awesomeness of Jeremy Northam couldn't make up for the rest of it, for me. (Have you seen An Ideal Husband? He was wonderful in that, too, and I adore the whole film!)

I have seen it, and I adore him in that as well. He's also in POSSESSION, along with Jennifer Ehle. Paltrow's also in that, and while her accent is better, she had little chemistry with Aaron Eckhart. I'd readily blame her for that, since I think he's dishy, but Catherine Zeta Jones had zero chemistry with him in that movie about chefs, so I'm not so sure - it could be him.
