13 Little Blue Envelopes

Well, as anyone who reads my Twitter account may already know - I loved, loved, LOVED Maureen Johnson's book 13 Little Blue Envelopes, which I finished reading a couple of days ago. It's such a perfect novel for any American - especially, I think, any American girl or woman - who loves or has a yen for European travel. The heroine races all around ( Read more... )

What a cool anecdote!

Like the image of the dog and stewardesses and your feeding Nika.

I immediately knew I wasn't in America anymore. ;) I asked very hesitantly if it would be okay for me to take her out of the crate (of course she hadn't been allowed into the Detroit Airport until she was inside the crate), and the stewardesses looked at me like I was crazy! "Of course! Take her out! Take her out! Can't you see she wants to come out?"

And she was sooooo delighted when the waiter at the café brought her her own bowl of sausage...

Happy anniversary!

Have you read Madensky Square by Eva Ibbotson? Vienna is very palpable in that book, though I confess, not having to Vienna, I don't know how well she's captured it. (I suspect well, though Vienna about 100 years ago...)

Ooh, I've read a bunch of Eva Ibbotson's kids' novels, but not that one! I will definitely look out for it. And I looooove fin-de-siecle Vienna - what a perfect setting!

Happy Anniversary!!

I would be a total basket case flying my dog to Europe (though of course if I were moving there they would absolutely come).

Blue has a sister who lives in Sweden now, though, so I guess it could be done.

I flew three times with Nika (Vienna to America, America to Vienna, Vienna to London), and every single time, I was a wreck with panic for the entire length of the flight, remembering every horror story I'd ever heard and imagining brand-new ones. And of course she absolutely hated the flights - she was very, very clingy for a few days after each of them. But I also felt and continue to feel 100% certain that she would always prefer to come with me than to make a new home with another family, so it was worth it...but still nerve-wracking!
