death by cat fluff

i have big welts from where entropy (one of the cats) squirmed and clawed me while i was sidetracked from retrieving him from the great outdoors by one (of the evidently many) neighbors who i've had to apologize to for his incessant whining ( Read more... )

enf, moving, cats

I was about to query about air cleaners. Glad to know someone beat me to it.

i have done quite a bit of reading on air purification systems lately...it's a bit overwhelming, actually...there are more options than i realized and they are too expensive to not make an informed decision...

last night enf tried to get me one of these blueair units for the bedroom, but nowhere had the 201 model in stock. i think i'm going to order myself one online today.

juice_weasel posted some good advice...it's valuable to know about units people have and like...

By the way, drugstore.com is currently offering 20% off on the air purifiers.

I'm pretty sure if we start now, something can be found to solve the cat/window problem. How about fans that adjust to fit in the casement? There is special cat-proof window screening.

And the unpacking part is just crappay. You need margaritas.

If you want you can borrow my air cleaner for a week or so and see if it helps.

ooooo, tempting.

what kind do you have? how much area does it do? does it create ozone? if it's a hepa, how often do you have to change filters?

It's a Friedrich C90A. (Discontinued - the current model is the C90B, which Consumer Reports raved about.) It's electrostatic, don't have to change filters, just requires occasional cleaning. Not sure exactly how much space it's rated for. No ozone.

Give him a little bit of time, I suppect he'll be home to you before long.

As for the neighbors, ingor them! Cats are still free creatures. Do your best to make sure one isn't crying because they can't get what they want, but don't hurt yourself by keeping windows closed.

i'm not too worried about my sweetie...i know we'll get quality time together again eventually...

i wish i could figure out why entropy is so vocal outside...he's fairly quiet inside, but has no qualms about jumping out of windows...i mean, if he doesn't want to be outside, why would he jump out the window?

neo wants to be outside, but is afraid to jump out the window, so he sits on the window sill and whimpers.

argv appears to have no interest in the outside world and can be found happily sleeping on the couch or trying to sit behind me to eat my hair.

can we keep her (argv) and send the boys to boarding school?

Do you have medical bennies? Can you get Rx level allergy meds, or possibly allergy shots? If no, do antihistamines help? (The only type I can take is Tavist (clemastine fumarate). It doesn't give me the jitters like all the others do. I take a half-dose, but I take it slightly more frequently than recommended for a regular dose).

So the windows swivel in/out along one side? That's a tricky one. Is it possible to put screens on the inside?

What's up with the grouchy neighbors?

Do you have an air cleaner? Is it possible for enf/a groomer/someone to bathe the cats occasionally (to reduce dander)?

I've seen line/leash/harness arrangements for cats, where the leash slides on a fixed section of line. The ones I've seen were for cats that were only allowed outdoors in limited circumstances, but perhaps something could be rigged for entropy so he can't reach the windows to jump out?

Stuff will work out. You've got a lot going on, and lack of sleep & lack of breathing make everything much, much

i'm much calmer and more rational about all this during the day...at work...breathing freely...

and last week i made an appt. with an allergist...it's tomorrow morning...wheee, drugs! however, i'd like to find a way to adjust my environment such that i only require medication for allergy flare-ups (such as times when i'm doing something that triggers asthma and/or sneezing, like vaccuuming) and visiting the z'shack.

the operable portions of the typical windows are about 16" wide by 4 or 5' tall...and swing out. we have double hung windows with those cheesy sliding-adjustable screens in the kitchen that we're leaving constantly open about 4" each...and the double hung bathroom window is open a crack (it slams shut if it isn't propped open with something...currently, i think enf propped it open with a bottle of white-out *heh*)
