i'm sorry to hear about the continued bullying of your poor gerbil, though. that's so hard! maybe if you do wind up needing to keep them in separate cages, you could try getting a new friend for the one who's left alone? maybe he'll like a different gerbil better?

(Disclaimer: All my "wisdom" does not come from years of experience but reading things on websites.) Apparently gerbils are vicious little things when they're put together with someone new; it's very likely that they start fighting right away. Not because they don't like each other but because they don't know each other. So you have to slowly let them get used to each other -- which is about the same process as trying to get two gerbils who have been fighting back together. :|

I don't consider breakfast to be a high priority when chosing accomodation (after all, I can just as well go out and get something; and most hostels have a self-serving kitchen where you could even cook your breakfast). But it's sure a nice thing to have!
