I know, but first of all, I have no idea which people to friend for that kind of stuff, and secondly, then I'd be stuck wading through my flist and ignore the five personal posts each day this girl makes, whom I secretly don't like at all, but I have her on my flist because she'll probably be the first one to post new Jared pictures. (Not talking about a specific, or even existing, person here, just an example.) And I'm not so good on the one-sided friending thing when I'm the one side.
Yikes, errr...I don't know how to respond to that. I guess it just comes naturally on my flist. If you're (general you) involved with fandom people, it's there in their journals.
I know I could (and should!) friend more fandom people. I can't even truly tell you why I don't, apart from reasons like I mentioned above, other than that I'm horrible at making new friends.
I've always found a lot of stuff on my friends of friends page. Or if that doesn't cut it, try browsing the friends lists of some bigger communities in the fandom. That way you don't have to friend people one-sided and still get a lot of news and chatter.
I usually don't have problems to keep up with stuff (although mostly I know half of the things half a day after everybody else does), and a lot comes from community browsing like that. Which is fine, but not very convenient. Like I said in an above response, a community like I'm imagining isn't necessary, but would be handy.
I usually check out the daily news there (spoiler-free ftw!). It's so hard to stay spoiler-free, and they're doing an excellent job. I used to have that community on my friendslist, but took it off when there was too much stuff that didn't interest me (recs etc.). It seems to have gotten a bit better, though, maybe I should put it back on.
