Woohoo, go Supernatural! Another season to mess the boys up even more. They should stop after five, though. Five is a good number. And I'm dreading the cliffhanger for that one, seriously.

I've started reading more books again lately. (like Coraline and Stardust by Neil Gaiman) Right now it's Faerie Lord by Herbie Brennan and Eine Welt dazwischen ( Read more... )

books, poll, supernatural

I really enjoy reading books by James Michener, but his novels tend to be epically long (like, 800 pages minimum). So I will read one, read a short (200 page-ish) book, then read another Michener. I can't read 2 long novels in a row or I will burn myself out.

I can imagine that you need a break after one of those.

I need different books for different moods and even, weirdly for different times of day.

That's interesting. I know that from stories, sometimes I'm in the mood to read porn, sometimes it's cuddling, sometimes humor, sometimes angst. I don't think it's the same for me for books, though.

I usually read just one book at a time if it's in Finnish or English, but then there are books I read to practice other languages (German, Swedish, French), which I read on the side (slower and in smaller doses).

Five languages, wow. I can't even imagine reading a Spanish book (I bought and left the only one I had in Peru). I'd probably have to read that in small doses, too.

once in a while i'll have two books going, but usually just one. i read stories while i'm reading novels, though, does that count? like, i'll set the book down and pick up my laptop instead, find something fannish to read. :)

I think no, mostly because I can't imagine anyone having to finish the book they're currently reading to start reading a story. And stories are usually much shorter than books, and mostly I was interested if there are other people who switch back and forth between longer plots, like me. :)

To qualify my answer: when I read really long fic I always take regular breaks and read a short story or two, I don't read several long fics at the same time. And I always got a nonfiction book around that I read after the morning paper if I've got time.

Seems like you're a very organized reader. ;-) Story reading is quite different for me than book reading (with the exception of really long stories, like 90,000 words and up, which I'm planning to print out and will probably treat just like a book then). Lately my attention span isn't that great, so while I will start one big story, I get distracted, and then I skip forward, or skim the story, and once I know all the interesting scenes, I'll inevitably lose interest, so I can very quickly start another. I don't like that kind of reading myself. But occasionally I do read one long story beginning to end, and I understand that it can get tyring and you need breaks - or even read other things inbetween.
