Do you sometimes think there's too much sex in a story? I do. I have that problem with sex-heavy epics, and, probably even more, with verses. I love sex in stories. I'd go so far as to say that it's the main reason why I read slash. I find the thought of two guys having sex incredibly hot. But I really do get tired of what is basically the same sex ( Read more... )

Heh. It's funny because writing sex scenes is so hard for me, harder than pretty much everything else, so I always limit myself to one sex scene - written with half closed eyes and clenched teeth - per story, no matter how long the story is. Probably could never do PWP. :D

I always start PWPs and then I stop in the middle of the sex because it sounds too clinical. ;) A lot of people seem to have problems with writing sex, but some pull it off quite well. Only: it can get too much, and you should definitely stop if your scene only sounds like an instruction of what goes where anymore.

I like reading them even in longer stories if there's some build-up, or if there's something new about the scenes (and I don't mean just a new position). But I think it's very hard not to slip into a pattern with the sex scenes for an author where they all end up sounding the same. I'm probably guilty of it as well, although not in one story, because my stories usually aren't that long.

sometimes? i think it's more that i think there are just too many words in a story than that there's too much sex, though, because if the sex is furthering either the plot or the character development, then it's not boring to me - much like all the other words. but then, i sort of think every word should matter, and if it doesn't, it should probably be deleted.

i think most stories are longer than they need to be.

Hee, you should be a technical writer. That's about the first thing we learned, to keep everything to the important stuff and leave out the filler words. It clashes quite heavily with the story writer part of me that wants to fluff up sentences. ;)

And sometimes, I guess you have to have a lot of words, even if they're not all 100% needed, if your plot is long and you don't want to write it off in three pages. The problem is when your plot is short and you blow it up. And I think it happens a lot with sex scenes where the action just isn't all that much to describe. I can live with that if it happens two or three times in a story (hell, I enjoy that, a lot), but it just gets boring after a while.

I definitely skim sex scenes sometimes. I guess lots of authors don't particularly like writing them, and take the easy way out ie. making it just a list of acts, which just isn't very interesting.
