I love that like two or three people on my flist are all discovering Eureka right now, because I watched first season when it was airing but then didn't have time to follow second season, so recently I went back and watched both seasons straight through and am now consumed with love for this show. I love its charm and its heart and how it takes sci-fi cliches and makes them new and funny and insightful. I love how characters like Nathan and Fargo, who would be caricatures on other shows, have depth and personality. I hope you'll post your thoughts about second season when you watch it. :D
Also, I like Abernathy, but him looking like Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a little weird for me. I am completely incapable of not thinking of him as John Winchester. (Which makes watching him in romantic comedies incredibly surreal.)
I'm totally looking forward to S2, and I'm hoping I'll have it together enough to be able to post some of my thoughts on it! The same goes for the upcoming S3. And yeah, I am definitely consumed with love for the show. It really is charming (that's the word I keep coming back to), and they really do a good job of playing with the cliches and using them to sharp effect. The fact that, as you say, characters like Fargo *aren't* cliches is a big part of why it works so well, I think.
The contrast between JDM as John Winchester and JDM in romantic comedies really is a sharp one. What's really weird is that I finally sat down and watched the whole Denny arc on Grey's Anatomy, and the number of times that something he did or said was spot-on Abernathy was startling; I hadn't seen this before I started writing the character, or before I made the JDM = Abernathy association.
JDM is totally not how I pictured Abernathy. Huh. Curious! (I always think it's interesting when authors picture characters, because I almost never do so -- I'm one of the least visual writers ever. I forget what canon characters look like occasionally when writing fic. I still don't know what the main characters in my novel look like; I keep an eye out for actors that twig me as being similar, which occasionally happens.)
Also, I'm in Japan right now (visiting relatives; my grandfather and uncle are Buddhist priests and the house is attached to the temple, with Mt. Fuji in the background), and yesterday I ate raw whale when we were at Kamakura (famous for the giant Buddha and the most gorgeous hydrangeas ever). It didn't taste like much. A little bit fishy. Also, festival in Yoshiwara today, and street vendors with, you know, popcorn and cotton candy and stuff, but also squid on a stick, squid not on a stick, fish on a stick -- literal fish, scales and eyes and all -- and floats in the street, drumming back and forth at each

Actually, this is exactly what I do. I had no idea what Abernathy looked like until maybe a year or so ago, when the subject came up, and then I spent some time looking around before I finally saw JDM somewhere and went "Yes!" Otherwise, I think I'm pretty much like you; I don't tend to really get strong visuals for characters, other than maybe a very basic sense. I still don't have a good image in my mind of the young Abernathy.
Also, your description of Japan is fabulous, and yes, it sounds like I would have loved all of that. It sounds absolutely amazing, all of it, and, oh man, I would get such a kick out of trying raw whale.
