Oh, that last line. That last line.

I just want to pat them on the head because they're so good here, and so believably good. It's like they're finally learning. It's sweet in its way, in their way, with a difficult undercurrent.

It's fantastic. *hugs*

*hugs* Thank you.

I knew what the last line was going to be fairly early on, so I was working toward that most of the time I was writing this. And I know: it really does feel like they're *finally* learning something, and that's one of the things that really fascinates me about this season, the way major events seem like they would inevitably cause a paradigm shift in the dynamic between the two of them. Things are still difficult between them, but the source of the tension has changed now, and I'm interested in how that will change *them*.

Love the ease/tension they have with each other and Mac knowing exactly how to handle a drunk Danny. Loved their makeout session and the sex was very hot. Great story.

Thank you! I'm really interested in how the events of this season have shifted their dynamic and the source of tension between them, and how that might possibly affect their relationship and how they are with each other in general. It's a fascinating question, especially given how much they seem to have in common.

Aaaah! *so* good - I could just see all of this through-out, the dialogue was so spot-on, so Danny and Mac and all their history and how they have these hugely significant conversations and don't actually say that much. And I agree, the last line is perfect - this is how things work sometimes, you have all these issues with each other, and you don't actually talk or do anything about them and life goes on more or less as usual and then you realize one day that you've somehow managed to be better with each other than you were before, and you have no idea how or why. But, given their history together, I'd say 'benefit of the doubt' is a good place to start. not to mention hot semi-drunken insomniac sex. Welcome back and great job!

Thank you! It's really good to be back.

One of the tricks to writing Mac and Danny is trying to figure out how to get them to have these kind of conversations while they're, like you mentioned, not actually saying all that much. So much of what goes on between them, they're never going to come right out and say, or even hint at, even when they're actually putting some kind of effort into communicating. And I like your description of things going along as usual, with neither of them quite realizing at first that they *have* managed to be better with each other.

And yes, benefit of the doubt is a *very* good place for them to start, given everything that's happened between them.

After Child's Play, I kept wanting to write something about Danny trying to deal with things and winding up going to Mac, and yet could never really get it to come out the way I wanted. Thanks to you, now I don't have to. ;) This was just fantastic, too. Poor woobies, they both have so much in common -- unfortunately for them sometimes -- but even when they're not themselves, when they're all mad here, they're learning how to give and take with each other -- fortunately for them... and for us. ;)

Thank you! They really do have so much in common, and the parallels and similarities between them seem to have only gotten stronger over time. I'm really interested in that, and interested in how this season's events have caused a shift in their dynamic. They seem to be in a place right now where the bulk of the tension in their relationship is coming from outside forces/events, rather than primarily from their issues with each other, and I want to delve into how that changes (or doesn't) the way they are with each other.

And the fact that they're learning how to talk to each other is nothing short of a miracle.
