"He's not seeing me, he's just remembering."

I felt so sorry for Martha when she said that. The Doctor's head is so stuck in the past, he can't see what great potential Martha has to be, possibly even surpassing Rose. And when he does acknowledge Martha, he has this glazed over look like he's trying to superimpose Rose's head onto Martha's body.

...though I would find it hilarious if Martha found a picture of The Doctor and Rose together and photoshopped herself in Rose's spot. Just saying.

As I like to say, and as this episode devastatingly points out, (especially when Tallulah begs him to save Lazlo), for the Doctor, it's not about winning, it's about never letting anything die on his watch again. I didn't really like that two episode arc the first time, but in retrospect it breaks my heart.

(I'm so pleased I've gotten you hooked on Doctor Who.

My brain's not firing on all cylinders right now, but yeah, in general, to all of it. In the scene with the very last Dalek, the Doctor says he's the only person in the universe that might show the Dalek compassion, but he could have also said that he's the only person in the universe who has any idea what it's like for Dalek Caan(?) to be the Last.

I also think you've got a great handle on the dyanmic between the Doctor and Martha. My sense of things is that the Doctor is self-aware enough that, on some level, he recognizes what he's doing, but right now he can't change it, he just can't move on yet.

I also feel like, even before he lost Rose with such heartbreaking finality, Ten was worse at dealing with his grief than Nine, that Nine was more in touch with the emotion and therefore could express it, work through it, at least to a small extent. Ten? Not so much. (does that make sense?)
