So, how often have you gone to the ATM, and just wished that when you tell it how much cash you want, that it will spit out an extra $20? I certainly have. And today, I got 2 extra twenty dollar bills! So, should I be an honest person, and give the cash back, or keep it and run like hell ( Read more... )

Be honest and give the cash back; to keep it would be theft, and therefore wrong, perhaps even gravely wrong.

I think I'm with Joe on this one, but first you should double- and triple-check your reciept/bank statement to make sure the ATM didn't ALSO accidently take those two extra $20s out of your account.

While I know it would be nice to just have $40 extra, would you really feel good about yourself if you kept it?

P.S. There's a REALLY funny episode of Frasier that deals with this same incident... =)

I say keep the money. It's mechanical error. When you're at a vending machine buying a bag of chips and it drops two down, do you turn it back into the vending company? Yeah, didn't think so either. I'd eat them. I'd eat them right then... but then probably also buy a drink.

But I agree, keep an eye on your bank statements. They tricky about those account corrections.

Return the money. If you need convincing, it is the right thing to do and maybe they will trade you for some neat reward! Like maybe, a free ATM withdrawl, that neat picnic grill we all see in their advertisements, or a pat on the back from the mechanical bot that got scrapped once it made a human error.....

If they really cared about the cash, they could also review the ATM camera. Cheese! It must have been fun to see the green, though. If only life was like Monopoly!!! (so, would you like to have a monopoly party? eh? eh?)

Insert required proverb here: "Doing the right thing will astonish some, and gratify others." You gonna let some ATM stooge be your mealticket? Represent!

The Bad Person.... kelbrock April 19 2005, 03:11:53 UTC
I know the honest thing to do would be to return the money, and if it were anyone else other than my bank, I would totally return the money, but my bank would gladdly rob you of your socks if they could. I feel that it is like getting back one of those rediculous service charges that they hit me with for some stupid reason or another (uhhh, it took us two weeks to clear your check, and while that happened you dropped below your minimum balance, so you racked up $70 in service charge) for example. But maybe thats just me hating my bank.
