LOL frying pan!! Ah, I love ya for this post! I keep squeeeeing every time someone on my f-list is posting that freaking promo stuff. That's it - I'm doing icons tomorrow xDD
It's pretty easy with b/w icons but really tricky with colored stuff 'coz I don't have a base coloring for any of them - I honestly like to do some random moves and it always depends on the natural colors of the scene.
With b/w you just crop your pic, you decolor it and make it as deep as you can with "brightness/contrast". Then you create a new layer and put this texture on. Set it on "lighten" about 60% (or whatever looks good). Move it around as you like and then create another "brightness/contrast" layer on top of that to make it even brighter so this texture will linda merge with general deep color. And that's it. :)
