dilemma

we really need a new range of genres for fic. i've been thinking of how to classify my rpbb and i'm so stumped. i can't call it a romance because while there's kissing and touching it's not driven by any romantic element. i can't call it gen because, well, there's kissing and touching. can't call it horror because even though it's kind of dark it's ( Read more... )

Hmmmmm, I wonder if what you've got would kinda fall under what would be referred to urban fantasy. I mean SPN kinda leans that way to begin with and urban fantasy can have romantic elements without them being the thing that drives the story along. They also tend to range from light and fluffy to dark and scary but most of all they tend to be more driven by plot than porn. *shrugs* I dunno, just a thought.

I still haven't decided what to try and write for RPBB and I still haven't gotten started on my ReverseBB which is totally killing my NaNo groove. Ugh! *headdesks*

omg, not to disparage your suggestion at all, but it is def not urban fantasy, lmao. <3 i think we just need a genre term in general for fics that involve ships but aren't necessarily romantic, u feel.

are you doing rpbb! i didn't know that!

Yup, I feel you. *nods* Guess there's just some plots out there that refuse to be pigeon-holed into any one genre. LOL

And yeah, after you brought it up over at I went ahead and signed up. :D Now I'm flying by the seat of my proverbial pants trying to think up a story so if anyone has a pairing or plot bunny to throw my way feel free to do so.

On a brighter note, heard back from my ReverseBB artist and I think I may finally have a plot percolating for it.

VERY TRUE.

awesome!! i'm very partial to sam-centric rare ships, as you can imagine, lol. keep me posted on it!

and that is awesome! i'm leaning towards ripping my rbb up and starting over, so you are way ahead of me, lol.

I've heard the term "gen-bob" used to refer to stories that have romantic elements but definitely aren't "romances". Don't know how widely it's recognized, but that's the closest I can come to what you're looking for.

As for an alternative to "horror"... Um. "Gloaming"? Not that that's recognized by anyone, I don't think, but "twilight" would bring up all the wrong connotations.

I'm really interested in this, in genre issues, particularly hybrid and interstitial forms (and how "genre" in fic can vary from "genre" in not-fic, how fic itself is in some sense interstitial, could be.) Hmm, a fic-genre that says interstitial but not in the sense of slipstream, if that still means stemming in part from sci-fi/fantasy, owing something to horror, dark, romantic in some sense but not a romance; dark, demi-romantic--like a sort of gothic, revisionist gothic? Sounds v.intriguing! (Thinking about the background ship question in itself, also; not pre-slash because that tends to be used for more purposeful romantic directions? Not sub-slash...! I like background ship, whatever the genre is, too.)
