Only one??? A TRAVESTY.
I love the tempo of this excerpt--you strike that balance between the speaker's narrative and all that's going on at the table around it perfectly here. And love the sense you get as a reader that this narrator is in the middle of something that's all happening a bit too quickly, or isn't something to which he is accustomed. This comes through in his read of all of the food courses as well as, somehow, his comment about the Princess and her soup. The way he focuses in on that detail, perhaps inadvertently, is such a great detail.
