Damn, this is good. The wide open yet oppressive Wyoming setting, the Stephen King vibe ("Stand By Me" but spookier, bc Sam's being trained to be a killer) the end-of-innocence but (as you point out) there was never any innocence for Sam. He was born into the violence, raised on it. You make it feel so oppressive, so dark, even without all the rain and cold. Atmospherically perfect. Damn!

I love this. <3333 It reminds me of Dorothy Allison and Ed Southern, both of whom I was admiring as I reorganized my bookshelf last week. I love how quiet it is, the horror in that. The horror of murder, certainly, out there in the dark flat slate of Wyoming--but mostly the calm horror that inheres in the admission that it's a bad thing, it is, but maybe it doesn't matter in the way it should, or could; and maybe it's the fixing and the clean-up that do instead. Because like Dean here (and in many ways Sam, even if he's shaken, and even if he cries) we don't care enough about this dead boy, either; and we're guilty, too.

Really, really lovely atmospheric sleeper cell. <3

I appreciate (short) stories like this because they highlight how bad things could've gone for those two. Somewhat miraculous that this isn't what happened in their childhood.
