Summary: Things in the world happened for a reason. Because Wolfram and Hart wanted them to.
In the end it was all remarkably easy.
The Code civil des Francais was set out, a reform to the french legal system. After the Revolution, it was not hard to see the changes that would be coming, and Napoleon had the influence and power to ensure that the Code soon spread through the rest of Europe.
Numerous psychics had assured them that they had not underestimated his ability to conquer.
In the end, all Lindsey had needed to do was make sure he was in the right place at the right time. Once he was selected as one of the four jurists to set out the new legal code, it was a simple matter to put everything in that Wolfram and Hart approved of, and leave out anything they did not.
What, exactly, this had to do with the end of the world, Lindsey didn’t know, but that wasn’t his place to ask. He’d done his job satisfactorily, and would be long dead before any of Wolfram and Hart’s plans came to fruition.
His payment for doing this job was the stipulation to his contract with the firm - when he died, he stayed that way. Signed and sealed in blood.
“We thank you for making sure this happened so promptly, and with so little hassle.” The cloaked representative of the Senior Partner’s did not look up from the copy of the code Lindsey had provided.
“It was my pleasure.”
“As stipulated, your contract with us will expire upon your earthly demise. We hope that until then, you will continue giving Wolfram and Hart the benefit of your skills.” A copy of his contract was pushed in his direction. Lindsey took it and read it over carefully. One could never be too sure, after all. Not with Wolfram and Hart.
“You have a new job for me?” Lindsey asked, tucking the contract away.
“Yes. There is a prophecy of a vampire with a soul.” The representative unrolled a scroll, pointing to several lines in particular. “Our psychics have been able to give us a list of possible vampires that might fulfil this prophecy. Some have yet to be born, of course. But several are currently loose upon the world, and we would like to assign you to one of them, organize his removal if at all possible, so long as nothing could lead back to us.”
“Of course,” Lindsey replied. “Does this vampire have a name?”
“He calls himself Angelus. He is a particularly brutal one. It would probably be prudent to refrain from attempts at manipulation. Just remove him, preferably from a distance.”
Lindsey smiled. “I don’t think that will be a problem.”
“Good, you’re dismissed.” The representative disappeared, leaving Lindsey alone in the office.
Tapping his fingers idly on the edge of the desk, Lindsey contemplated this so-called brutal vampire. “Angelus, huh. I wonder how well you would fare against Daniel Holtz?”
He turned to leave the office, mind already whirling with possibilities. “No time like the present to find out.”
