Summary: There were many perks to dating Stefan Salvatore. Providing an alibi for his criminal brother wasn't one of them.

Elena’s parents had not approved of Stefan when she had first told them she was dating him.

They’ve since warmed up to him. Stefan is warm and kind, and absolutely everything his family is not.

But at times like this Elena can’t help but be reminded of that initial, knee-jerk disapproval when they’d heard the name ‘Salvatore’.

Most girls don’t have a boyfriend who has to cut a date short so he can go to the hospital and provide his brother with an alibi.

“What happened?” Elena grabbed their coats and rushed after Stefan, who was storming to his car. She thrust his jacket at him before he caught his death.

Stefan waved her off. “He said something about a meet gone bad. He sounded pretty drugged up, so who knows. But if the police show up, he was with us and we got mugged.”

It was a little alarming how used to this routine she’d gotten.

Stefan spent most of the drive to the hospital muttering to himself. Elena knew that he tried so hard to keep himself on the straight and narrow, and it pained him that Damon couldn’t seem to. Still, they were making progress with his older brother. This was the first time in almost two months that Damon had found himself in trouble.

Considering the fact that the entire police department were on a first name basis with him, this was quite the accomplishment.

When they got in to see Damon, he didn’t look too bad. There was bruising down one side of his face, and his arm was in a sling, but he was conscious and smiled when he saw them.

“Hi!” He practically chirped. “Clean break, they gave me the good drugs. I fucking love hospitals.”

“Right.” Stefan shook his head and took a seat near the end of his brother’s hospital bed. “You’re an idiot, you know that?”

“It’s not my fault,” Damon replied airily. “We are a family of crime, Stefan. You’re the black sheep here, not me.”

“And look where that got our parents,” Stefan replied pointedly.

Damon was in too good a mood from the drugs to do more than glare half-heartedly at him. “You’ll tell the police I was with you?”

“Of course I will.” Stefan sighed and slid Elena an apologetic look. Elena smiled back at him. “You’re my brother.”

“Good.” Damon turned to Elena and blinked blearily at her. “Stefan, is your girlfriend here, or I am hallucinating again?”

Stefan frowned. “What kind of drugs are you on?”

“They don’t mix well with that other stuff I’ve been taking,” Damon told him with a giggle, holding a finger to his lips. “Don’t tell the nurses.”

“You’re an idiot.” Stefan made no move to rat on his brother, so Elena assumed this wasn’t too uncommon an occurrence.

“I’m really here, Damon.” Elena waved at him. She didn’t approve of much about how Damon lived his life, but she tried to get along with him for Stefan’s sake. Admittedly, it wasn’t terribly difficult when Damon was so charming, but there were many moments when she wanted to smack him over the head with something. “Does your arm hurt much?”

“I have arms?” Damon looked down to check. “I’m so high right now I wouldn’t feel it if you cut them off.”

“Well, it’s nice to see that you’re not suffering.” Stefan patted his brother on the shoulder. “But when the police get here, it’ll probably be best if you pretend to be asleep. Or at least keep your mouth shut.”

“I’m not gonna tell them the truth,” Damon said. “I lie so much it practically is the truth anyway.”

“Just...please. Make this a little bit easy for me?” Stefan asked.

Damon stared at him for a moment, then yawned and leaned back against his pillows. “Suddenly, I find myself unable to keep my eyes open for a second longer. If you take this opportunity to have sex on the other bed, I will kill you with spoons.”

Stefan’s lips quirked in a small smile. “Goodnight, Damon.”

Damon muttered indecipherably and shifted in the bed before his breathing slowly evened out.

After she was sure that Damon was really asleep, Elena stood to leave. “I’ll go get coffee, okay?”

“Thanks.” Stefan grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze. “Hey, I’m sorry this ruined our date.”

Shrugging, Elena smiled and bent to press a kiss against Stefan’s lips. “I don’t mind. We’ll have coffee here instead of at my place. The police might be coming, but at least my parents aren’t here.”

Stefan smiled. “Thank you. Really.”

Elena nodded and went to get coffee. Maybe other girls got dates that weren’t interrupted by their boyfriend’s criminal brother. But other girls didn’t have Stefan, who was worth sitting in the hospital with bad coffee and giving his criminal brother a false alibi.

Stefan was one of the good guys, no matter what anyone else thought.
