Summary: Life in the Garden was perfect. But Dean wasn't.

Life in the Garden was perfect. This was a fact that could not be missed by anyone who lived there. If the lack of crime, lack of poverty and lack of wanting for anything escaped one’s attention, the fact that you couldn’t go even a day without someone telling you how perfect it was soon got the message across.

Dean had been born in the Garden, raised in the Garden and had the perfection of the Garden drilled into his head from a young age. He should’ve been just another little automaton bee, busy working for the Hive like perfect little Sammy. He wasn’t - he hated the Garden. He was constantly bored, attempted to pick fights and wanted something different for himself than the ‘perfect’ life his aptitude tests had placed him in.

The thing was, Perfection only existed if everything that wasn’t perfect was removed.

On his eighteenth birthday, Dean was politely told that he wasn’t a good fit for life in the Garden, and he should consider leaving to find his own path. Dean wasn’t a fool. He knew they weren’t asking. He didn’t say goodbye. He had been a constant disappointment to his parents, who had barely spoken to him since he had turned sixteen and they’d asked him to move out so he didn’t negatively influence Sam’s adolescence. Sam denied he even had a brother, which had hurt even more than his parent’s rejection.

There was nothing keeping him in the Garden, so Dean had left without complaint.

The world outside the high walls of the Garden was wild and overgrown. The trees and grass weren’t perfectly trimmed. The roads were cracked, signs directed him to places without names like ‘Harmony’ or ‘Charity’. Dean had no idea where ‘Rolling Stone’ was, but the name was interesting enough that he planned to visit.

He met Castiel a few miles after setting out from the edge of the Garden. Castiel had been something of a friend. Neither of them had fit it, but the Garden had been so discouraging of their attempts to spend time together that in the end it hadn’t been worth it. Dean shouldn’t have been surprised that Castiel had also gotten the boot.

“What are you doing?” Dean asked in greeting, walking across the dirt road to where Castiel was sitting outside a dilapidated little garage.

Castiel turned away from the strange automotive vehicle he was regarding. “I found this, but I have no idea how it works.”

Dean walked over and ran his hands over the metal frame. It had seen better days, but still... “It’s beautiful.”

“I suppose,” Cas said doubtfully. He poked it. “I really only care if it runs. My brother told me that if life in the Garden didn’t work out, I should follow him. I know where to go, but it’s a very long walk.”

Castiel had many siblings. Most of them, such as his eldest brother Michael, were perfect in the eyes of the Garden. Two of them, though, Lucifer and Gabriel, had left several years before.

“If I help, can I keep it?” Dean asked, examining the vehicle more closely.

“Come with me to where my brothers live, and you can do what you like with it,” Castiel replied. “I’d like the company.”

“Deal.”

It took him an hour to figure out the vehicle. An hour after that, Dean was in love.

The week long journey was the most fun Dean had ever had. When they reached the town Castiel’s brothers lived in, Dean decided to stay.

The day they lost control of a tractor and accidentally drove it through a barn wall, Gabriel just laughed and told them to fix the mess.

That was day Dean realized what a perfect life really was.
