It was the frantic knocking on the door that woke him.
Samuel Winchester rolled over in bed, making sure his wife was still sleeping despite the cacophony. Jessica was pregnant with their third child, and needed all the rest she could get.
He got out of bed, quietly lit a candle and made his way to the front door, pausing to peer in on his children, still peacefully asleep in their beds. He swung the door open before his late night visitor could go back to pounding on the door and wake his family. “What is it?
Simon, one of the blacksmith apprentices, bounced on the balls of his feet and ducked his head apologetically. “Terribly sorry to disturb you, Mayor, but we need your expertise. Master Smith has caught a demon, sir, and we don’t know how to exorcise it.”
Sam quickly pulled on more layers to keep the cold off and followed Simon towards the Smith residence.“You have it secured?”
Simon nodded. “Yes, sir. We caught it in a Devil’s Trap. Master Smith is watching it. He has holy water, salt lines and iron weapons, but we were hoping to get rid of it without harming the host. She’s the outsider, sir, who came to town a few months back - she’s with child, and we neglected to provide her with the necessary charms.”
“It’s been so long since a demon has bothered our town, Simon, we’ve all become a bit negligent.” Sam knocked on the door to the Smith house, smiled at Smith’s wife when she answered. “Sorry to disturb you, Abigail.”
“The sooner that demon is removed from that poor girl, the better.” Abigail led them through to where Smith had the demon trapped, and left them to it.
“Sorry to bother you, Sam.” Smith nodded towards the demon, trapped under the influence of the Devil’s Trap drawn on his ceiling. “This one caught us by surprise, hasn’t been a proper demon possession in town for a long while. We would’ve called the Sheriff, but he’s away with the hunting party.”
“Dean always did like hunting vampires,” Sam replied before turning his attention to the demon. “Once we remove you from this poor girl, I suggest you stay away from this town. As you’ve no doubt noticed by now, we have many protections against your kind.”
“I’m not here to hurt anyone!” The demon protested. “My name is Ruby, and I can help you. I know of a knife that can kill demons.”
Smith snorted. Sam opened the book of exorcisms and began to prepare. “We prefer to keep the human host alive, and we’ve had very few problems with your kind until you came along, Miss Ruby, so I’ll have to decline your offer.”
Sam showed Smith the passage of the exorcism he was going to use, and waited while the man opened his own copy of the book. They ignored the demon’s increasingly frantic protests as they finished preparing.
“You won’t sway us,” Sam told her. The demon finally stopped pleading and watched them begin the exorcism in defeat.
“We aren’t the kind of people who make deals with demons.”
