Standing up from where he had been seated rigidly on the mattress, Subaru strode over to Yuffie, his chest tightening at the sight of her. From what he had heard over the intercom, he had painted a clear picture in his mind of what Yuffie looked like--a youthful smile, an inextinguishable energy. He had been right, for the most part; she was small, bright-eyed and spirited, but it was as if someone had taken the image he had created and deliberately marred it. Shiny, painful-looking burns covered the girl's arm, shoulder and neck, and her hair was singed quite as badly as she'd described.
He gingerly reached out, leading her slowly into the room. "It's nice to finally meet you, Yuffie-chan," he said in a soft voice, offering her a small smile. His eyes trailed to her hair again and he sighed quietly, leading her further into the room.
"I'm not sure how we're going to go about doing this..."
"Nice to finally meet'cha too." She smiled back, feeling a bit better as she was lead in. It was nice to see that even though he appeared concerned, it didn't look like she was going to be getting told off. (Yet. Oh Gods, she didn't want to see Reeve until she looked somewhat presentable. She didn't need him thinking she was worse off then she was.)
Yuffie sat down on the bed, pulling her knees up so she was sitting cross legged.
"I have some scissors." She said after a moment, and it had taken quite a bit to get them. Stupid Josh. "So basically I just need all the burned stuff gone. It's all dead and gross."
"Thanks Subaru." Yuffie said finally. She didn't exactly make eye contact, her pride was pretty badly damaged after all, but she was very VERY grateful to to see have him here.
Though relieved that Yuffie hadn't lost her youthful spark as a result of the attack, Subaru couldn't help but notice she wasn't quite meeting his eyes. Suddenly rather self-conscious, he cleared his throat, accepting the proffered scissors delicately. He'd removed his gloves before while comforting Reeve, and had yet to put them back on. It was strange, how the phases of his life seemed to incorporate alternately wearing them and removing them; he wasn't sure what this particular phase signified, but he was loathe to put them back on for some reason

Yuffie was surprised to feel something settle around her shoulders, but calmed quickly. This was Subaru, who had been nice to her since day one. There was no reason to be twitchy.
She'd been through worse fights and hadn't gotten this shaken up, what was wrong with her? She couldn't even figure it out. All she could think was that it had something to do with the fact that she hadn't won.....But even she didn't win all the time. It might be the fact that she had actually gotten hurt, but that had happened before too. Cure didn't fix everything and she'd had to fight with broken limbs, or even burns before. So that didn't seem to fit either. And it wasn't helping her already nervous mood to worry like this. So she tried to toss it away like she would any other time

Subaru waited a few beats before slowly approaching the girl, scissors in hand. Her shoulders were so small that the black coat seemed to engulf her, and he sighed rather sadly, thinking almost longingly of Hokuto. Yuffie reminded him of her so much it was painful. Her voice over the intercom was enough to drag memories to the surface, but now, seeing her in the flesh, looking so much like her, talking like her, moving like her
( ... )
Subaru held very still as he continued to cradle Yuffie against him, hand still moving in slow, comforting circles over her back as she poured her tears over him. He waited until her shoulders had stopped heaving, her voice to stop quivering, and finally stopped the movement of his hands, simply wrapping her in his arms and rocking her.
"I don't mind," he assured her with a smile. He gently grasped her shoulders, moving her away from him, so he could see her face. Lifting his hand, he brushed away a few more stray tears, before reaching up to tweak a lock of her hair.
That got a watery sort of laugh out of her, her head ducking a bit as she smiled. It wasn't as bright as her usual ones, or even as wide as one she would use when she proved exactly how much someone had underestimated her. But it was sincere.
Rubbing at her face to try and remove the rest of the tear tracks, Yuffie tried to figure out exactly what to do. She wasn't sure how to deal with any of this, and the things she could think of, often weren't things she was willing to do. But she was going to have to figure something out. And hey, wasn't like it was the end of the world. Those had to be harder to deal with then this, if she just thought about it. She could live. and when all of them got through this they could laugh about how hard they thought things had gotten when they won in the end.
"Yeah, yeah I am."
She paused for a moment, unsure how to go about this as gratitude had never really been her forte, then simply went ahead and said it.
Relieved to hear Yuffie laughing again, Subaru smiled gently in return, releasing her shoulders to reach down and gently pat her hand. It was just like this place, he thought with a hint of bitterness, to inject misery into the brightest and most hopeful of people, and he was more than a little tired of it. He had decided, ultimately, that he would fight that notion in any way he could, to try and preserve what little strength he had, and use it be of assistance to anyone who needed it. His magic had been stripped away from him, but they could never take his ability to connect with other human beings, and he intended to hold onto it for as long as he could

Yuffie appreciated the kindness Subaru was showing her, and it was nice to know that somebody was there and wanted to help her. She knew that Reeve did, that wasn't a question, but she was also worried about relying on him too much, she didn't want to add on to any of his troubles. And it made her happy. She had become used to having a base of people behind her who she could rely on, and losing that here was like losing a part of herself. Or at least losing something far too important to measure in Materia or treasure.
As she let him work, the ninja focused on trying to remind herself of the good things, both here, and when she returned home. She knew that they would escape this place. She knew they could. She knew Tifa was going to turn into such a mother hen about the both of them. She knew people would be waiting. And she knew more then anything, that she was going to be strong again, and then there was no way anything could happen. Even if there was another attempt to end the world, she would fight, and they would win. Because
