Jack sauntered wearily into the games room and leaned a shoulder against the door jamb, hands deep in his trouser pockets, watching Face’s - interesting - interpretation of the game of pool.

“Well, either pool’s changed a lot by your time,” he drawled, “or you’re actually playing something completely different.”

Jack gave Face an equally innocent, unruffled look, and answered Nunnally’s question with complete, simple honesty. “Yes, he’s part of my team,” he said warmly, making it clear that anyone who was part of his team was someone he loved and valued very much. He lifted an amused eyebrow at Face, practically daring him to take that line of questioning any further. Not that he had any objection to it whatsoever - he and Ianto hadn’t exactly been trying to be particularly discreet - but because Face seemed to think it had the potential to embarrass him or something.

If so, Face had a lot to learn about Captain Jack Harkness.

He glanced down at the pool table. His opponents’ shot had actually been a pretty decent break-off shot, spreading the balls nicely and potting one ball. “Okay, you downed a stripe so you’re stripes,” he announced cheerfully. “And you get another go.”

Face just sort of shrugged and smirked in Jack's direction. Being annoying for no reason was one of his many jobs and teasing people about relationships -even people like Kell and Tyria who made bombs for fun and had killer Jedi powers, respectively, which always added a fun element of danger to the mix - were practically begging him to mock them, regardless of who was involved. Annoyingly, the Captain did not appear the type easily embarrassed. How disappointing. Eyeing the striped balls he picked a new one and aimed again before nudging Nunnally to let her know it was her turn.

"A broken heart contest sounds incredibly depressing." He observed, adding melodramatically, "As I would know, having left a string of them behind me as I make my way through life." Helping her get a hold of the cue, he asked, "Who's Onii-sama?"

Jack chuckled. "Don't let Ianto know you could smell him on me! He'd probably take it as evidence that he hadn't washed enough or something - the poor boy's everso obsessed with being clean and tidy and he's mortified at the lack of facilities here!"

He watched Face line up the next shot, very, very approving of the almost unthinking consideration he was showing in involving Nunnally in this. "Have to agree with Face, though: a broken hearts contest does sound a tad depressing."

"Ooh, thanks for the ammunition. Captain." Face replied with a wicked grin. "I've been looking for someone new to harass." What could he say? He got bored.

He watched the balls spin out from Nunnally's hit, not glancing around after her comment about the nurses because that would not be the sneaky thing to do. "I take it this is the part where we come up with a brilliant escape plan?" He replied in an equally low tone that lost none of the drama he loved to include in almost everything he said.

“Upset Ianto at your peril,” Jack declared, his tone light but a definite warning lurking somewhere beneath it. He still felt ridiculously protective of Ianto; mostly, he suspected, because of the fact that back home he was dead and Jack wanted him to be as happy as was humanly possible here. Not that he was sure it was humanly possible to be happy here, but he was going to do his damndest.

“And please, Nunnally, don’t be embarrassed. Just don’t tell Ianto, yeah? Unlike me, he is easy to embarrass.”

This time, Face and Nunnally’s shot hadn’t been so successful, so he moved round beside them under the pretence of sizing up the lay of the balls for his own shot. “I don’t know about escape plans, but do either of you know what happened to Naminé? One day we had a ‘treatment’ together and the next she just disappeared. And there are a couple of others I haven’t seen around for a few days either.”

He moved away again to line up his shot and managed to pot that ball but missed the next. “Over to you!” he said cheerfully.

Face glanced up sharply at the warning tone in Jack's voice, suddenly looking very curious and a bit thoughtful, like he was putting more puzzle pieces together in his head. He didn't say anything though, just stared for a moment more then glanced away. Whatever conclusion he had reached it was one he seemed to feel did not need to be announced to the world; surprising tact on his part, and a reminder that he did know when to cut the joking attitude and focus ( ... )

Face's unexpected silence on the subject of Ianto didn't comfort Jack at all, but there was no point pursuing it when there were more important things to discuss while they had the chance.

His expression grew bleaker and bleaker as he listened to Nunally reel off her list of the disappeared, and Face's theory didn't make his expression any lighter. "I know the treatments can be pretty dreadful," he murmured, "but they can't all be dead, surely! That's one hell of a death rate!"

"I'm not the only one with magical people reading powers?" Face asked tragically, not letting go even as he struck a dramatic pose. "You can be my sidekick. We will get matching costumes and fight crime. Or annoy people, I'm not sure which. We can try both approaches on Jack and see which we find more emotionally fulfilling."

He shrugged a bit unhappily at Jack's comment, deciding now was not the time to point out his squadron had the highest death rate in the New Republic armed forces. It would sort of kill the already bleak mood. "Experiments then, maybe? Its only a theory but somehow I can't see them sending them back home. They need us here for a reason; it's got to be a hell of a thing to get us all here after all."

And for all the exploring everyone had done here he doubted they had seen everything, or even close to it. "They're exceptionally good at keeping information from us; somehow I think they could manage. And there are plenty of ways to get rid of bodies." Sithspit this was a pleasant conversation, wasn't it?

Well, that was an interesting little revelation of Nunnally’s. Jack wanted to ask how it worked and whether it was just a result of her blindness or whether there was more to it than that, but now was not the time.

He chuckled at Face’s proposition. “I’m not easily annoyed, not by people I like anyway,” he grinned. “I’d say fighting crime - or at least the authorities here - is a better option!”

Sobering, he added, “And yeah, I can’t see that they’d have a problem hiding people’s deaths here. It really does bring up the question, though, of what the hell are we here for, doesn’t it?”
