He walked stiffly, shoulders back, head held high, trying to get this done quickly. Some pathetic, senseless assignment right by the patient block, and Jack was certain someone had done that on purpose. Some asshole with absolutely nothing better to do had thought it clever to assign Jack near his fri ( ... )

He was there, right in front of her, she walked towards him, her eyes narrowing as she got closer, thinking of things he said, thinking of how he said them, the tone of his voice. Sure, it’s fine to burn her off like that. She had just wanted to see him, but right now she didn’t even want to do that. Right now she was pissed. How could he!

She started towards him, right in front of him, her mind hearing him talk, that cute accent sullied with his words. With that horrible feeling he gave off as he spoke to her, to them! Just... how could he say that shit to Reeve, and after what he had gone through too? And then to Edgeworth as well? It was ridiculous! Poor Yuffie who wouldn't give up on him?! How... how could he?! The way he said he was surprised, that Nami wasn't hurt last night, as if he was expect her to always be god damned hurt ( ... )

It wasn't the slap that hurt the most. That was momentary pain, stinging only for a few minutes before beginning to fade. Nor was it the words, though they cut deeper, he thought, than she maybe realized. But no, the thing that hurt the most, that reached right into his heart and squeezed, was the sight of her trying not to cry-- because of him. Because of what'd he'd done, and nothing else. The guilt weighed down on him, and Jack shut his eyes briefly, trying unsuccessfully to block it out.

It was for their own good, damnit! It was better this way! It was almost certainly better this way, and he tried to cling to that when he heard their voices-- her voice-- whispering, hurt and angry, when he lied in bed and shut his eyes and tried to ignore the aching loneliness that threatened to nearly consume him. Never, in all his forty days at Edelweiss-- never, it seemed, in his life-- had he felt so alone. Alone and worthless and entirely wretched, and even that sole hope-- that this would save Nami, Edge, Reeve, Yuffie, all of them from ( ... )
