Aviator cap -- scrutinize it!
Hi, everybody! I've been lurking in this community for a while. I run the steampunk group on Ravelry, which is called Steamy Stitches. We have a thread there with steampunk pattern suggestions for both knitting and crochet, and those suggestions are condensed in a group page. It's a great resource, and I really enjoy moderating there, because everybody is wonderful. So nice!

Tonight I stayed up way too late finishing an aviator's cap, and I'd like you guys to take a look and tell me what you think. There's something about it that's not clicking with me, and I can't quite put my finger on it.
Yarn: Salvaged from a sweater. It's 80% wool/20% acrylic, I think. It's felted a bit, and has a really nice texture when knitted up. It's on the heavier side of worsted.
Needles: Size 8 US/5 mm
Size: For my head (22"), but it stretches a lot, so I would say it fits up to a 25" skull
Pattern: Made up by me in a very scientific manner

The construction is mindboggling simple. It's all knit in garter rib. The center panel is just a 4-inch wide rectangle, which the sides are picked up from. You work three columns of decreases, the center one being a double decrease, to draw it all into a helmet shape. You keep decreasing until you get the strap the width you want, and then you cast off on one side and work the other one until it reaches and work a buttonhole on that end. Ta-da! Aviator cap.
The flash makes me look a bit like I'm a second away from eating all your heads, but the flash shows off the true color pretty well on my computer. It's a sort of burgundy-ish red, but not too purple.

OK, so it's pretty cute right now, but what I'm fussed over is the decreases on the side panels. I feel that it might look better if the center triangle was wider, and the two columns of garter rib on the sides were narrower, so that the point where all the decreases come together was lower down -- closer to my jaw. The double decrease column has to stay where it is -- radiating from the crown -- because that's the one that makes the side panels curve right. The apex of the curve has to be on the crown. I'm concerned, though, that if I make the bottom panel of garter rib narrower, that it won't cup the bottom of the head right.
Anybody have an insight or opinions they want to offer?
