Leek was toying with Connor’s ring. The broken chain lay in an untidy heap. Lester had bought Connor that chain. It would keep his mother’s ring safe, he’d said.
And it had. The ring was safe. It was Connor who was missing. Perhaps beyond help. And there was Leek talking, gloating even, as he described what he had done, outlining scenarios of payment and silence. As if he wasn’t already a dead man.
By his side Lester could feel Becker shaking with some barely supressed emotion. Lester felt only coldness. Leek had once been a friend.
“Enough,” he said softly.
