Lester wished nothing more than to shower and wash away the dregs of the day. Instead he poured himself a whiskey and turned to face his unwanted guest.
“I assume you’re here to bargain. I can promise you asylum in the place of your choice.”
“But not the time of my choice?” Helen shook her head. “That’s not why I’m here.”
“Stephen.” Despite his dislike, Lester’s voice softened at her expression. “I’m told it would have been quick.”
She blinked back tears. “I don’t want to be alone tonight. Please.”
“Stay then,” he said.
She began to unbutton her shirt.
