“You can open your eyes now,” said Connor releasing her hand.
Abby stared at the ring with its single diamond solitaire.
“It’s OK, isn’t it?” asked Connor, anxiously. “You don’t have to pretend to like it if you don’t. I can easily change it for something else, something bigger or a different colour. Or maybe you’d rather have chosen something for yourself.”
Abby placed her finger on Connor’s lips and he obediently shut up.
As she moved her hand the diamond sparkled with reflected light.
“Do you really like it?” asked Connor again.
“It’s perfect,” she said and kissed him.
