Becker scrutinised the ballroom. It was unlike Lester to leave his protégés unguarded. Miss Maitland had quickly settled and now boasted a full dance card and a new friend in the vivacious Miss Parker. Temple was visibly uneasy. Burton and Leek eyed him hungrily. As did the lovely, amoral Lady Christine.
Temple’s face was flushed and careless fingers had left hair and cravat dishevelled. Becker imagined his own fingers running through the thick, dark strands smoothing them away to reveal a pale neck ripe for kissing. Time to stake his claim.
He pushed through the crowds.
“My dance, I believe.”
