I don't understand what the big deal is about what Miss California said last night at the Miss USA pageant about gay rights. She said she's happy that we live in a land where this is acceptable but she was raised in a house where marriage is between a man & a women ( Read more... )

Wrong. Calling a law that provides the exact same benefits as another law something else is not "separate but equal" because it has no effects on the physical association of people.

The separate but equal laws of the Jim Crow era actually made it where people of different races couldn't be together in the same physical accomodations (ie blacks had to use a separate restroom than whites or couldn't dine in the same place).

Civil Unions that are marriage in every way except name only do not have this effect.

There is no right to be "protected" from what a law is called.

civil unions are not the same. all the same benefits are not provided.
and yes, i know "seperate but equal" is not exactly the same, but it is a very similar concept. i'm not trying to push anything here or cause trouble, i'm just saying one of the reasons people are troubled by not being able to have the same rights as everyone else.
