PSA: memery

Jan 10, 2012 11:27

I have a lot of posts to make about books, Saturday Morning Science, more recs, more writing, politics, dogs, cats, SOPA, academia but at the moment I'm swamped so I'll just say two things, pertaining to my new fandom, Merlin, and anonymity on the internet, because it's causing quite a lot of intense debate on my reading lists ( Read more... )

politics, homophobia, merlin, fandom politics, internet, anonymity

2) so did I. I was one of the twitter handles that was mentioned on meme. No secret with my twitter handle, though I don't publicize it that much ^_^

Yeah, I mean I just don't want to link this account to my other handle which in turn is linked back to my RL name really easily. It's not something I object to per se, I just don't want an obvious connection if that makes sense.

A*

*applauds you*

and I kind of agree with you on the anonymity thing. sometimes it's nice to be able to be anonymous and some of the discussions on m_m are genuinely interesting and probably wouldn't come up anywhere else, but slander is something I don't agree with either. but I'm not reading that much slander, so apparently I'm skipping the right threads.

I have no problem with discussing people and their actions, fandom politics or their stories, my personal line is: kinks, sexuality, anything that concerns somebody's personal life or self (that includes assumption about physical/mental state, body, unprompted comments about spending habits etc.). I don't want to come off as, you know, trying to divide the meme into "good memers" and "bad memers who like gossip" but I do draw my lines at visciousness and probing gossip.

Then again, I've never been in any kind of fannish spotlight, so I cannot really say how I would react if I were discussed on any kind of meme, so my opinion might change. (but I hope I know myself well enough to not completely flip ;)

+1 on 1 and 2

That's why I started to go to merlin_anon (I think that was the name) back in the day. I didn't have many Merlin friends on my flist and that's where the most discussion was. I also didn't know if I wanted Merlin friends. I stayed because it makes me laugh, sometimes even the trolls, and I've had great discussions there, as well.

Mmh, as I said to leviathans_moon above, I don't want to come off as "but I'm a good memer, honestly!" (which I think I did, to a degree) I just wanted to say that you can believe in anonymity on the internet and still have personal standards as to how you conduct yourself.

Oh, the trolls. I don't know what I would do without them.
