You can also throw in something about "I just wanted to make sure you had received my application." It makes you sound responsible and like you follow through on things (which you do) without being naggy.

I agree with Eva. One week is standard and a phone call is best (assuming you have a contact name and number). Especially if you are dealing with an informal application process (ie, you haven't gone through a recruiter or answered an ad for a posted opening - when that's the case it's much more acceptable [and sometimes better] to wait for them to get back to you). Her advice on what to say was spot-on as well, through probably a little more formal than you'll sound.

In the future if you want to give yourself a buffer you can say in your letter something to the effect of, "Thank you so much for your consideration, I'll give you a call next week or so to follow up and answer any questions you may have." Some people feel that's being pushy, but if the reality is that you're going to call (which you most likely should, and you are) then I don't think there's anything wrong with being up front about that.

Congratulations on the gum. Do you hear about TFA today?
