. Yes, I didn't know half this stuff before I started researching; the more I researched, the more steamed I became. The limitations on birth control, combined with the censure against unwed pregnancy makes my head all explody. As well as that teen mother age-differential thing. Grrrr.
in my case, you're preaching to the choir
Yes, this is such an emotion-based issue that my essay is unlikely to change anyone's stance. But I do hope I make some people think.
Unfortunately, it's so entrenched in our society to blame the woman that people don't even think about it. My mom was telling me about some people she knows; the parents divorced, and the daughter (in the 18 - 22 year range, I think) started "running around" and is now pregnant by an unknown father. Mom was particularly irritated when she reported that the "running around" included a couple of married men. I immediately pulled her up and said, if they were married, it was their responsibility to say no, to not break their vows to their wives. She finally conceded that

I said at the end of Part 1 that this was an excellent piece of work - Part 2 is just as good, but it still makes me angry that you need to say these things. This is an indictment of US culture - this second part particularly, the first part is more generic, generally applicable - and it's horrifying.

Yes. I understood the need for abortion availability almost instinctively, but when I learned the stats, I was livid. If people would just do a little research, instead of accepting the word or their favorite mouthpiece...

Yes; ours and any culture that enslaves women by denying all access to abortion. (It appears that anti-abortion beliefs go hand-in-hand with beliefs of male entitlement to sex with any and all women.) Horrifying and disgusting. Now if we could just get the policymakers to read it...
Thank you. And may I ask where you linked? (Just curious.) .

It's not just the "denies all access to abortion". It's the triple-bind that US legislation puts so many women in: no access to contraception (often combined with minimal or no sex education in school); no access to abortion (or access so limited it might as well be no access); no financial help bringing up children. I actually hadn't realised how sweeping all those provisions are. I knew that US employment law is anti-mother (anti any parenting support) but I hadn't realised how many states won't "permit" a woman with a child or children to support financial help. Ugly.

A couple of blogs I read regularly - Obsidian Wings and Pandagon. I'll be linking to this post whenever abortion in the US comes up for a while, I think - it really is a very sound piece of work.
I'm here from BB's Blog, and I am amazed at this article. It's very well written and hits all the points.
It's insane that these beliefs pervade so much of the US culture. I once had an arguement with my father about this, because he was of the belief that women would have late term abortions. I then pointed out that in pretty much every state.. it was illegal for it to happen unless under extremely rare circumstances. I tried to point out that it was propaganda. Lies. But he just stopped the conversation. *sigh*
At anyrate, very well written. Thank you for putting it all together like this. Maybe.. maybe if we can start by educating a few, it will help.

Thank you. I worked hard on it. I kinda hope that it spreads to various communities that can use the information to back up their stance.

The statistics are startling, particularly regarding the average ages of males fathering children on female teens.

Yes. I didn't realize just how much until I started doing the research for this article.

I hope so, too. Feel free to link this article should you ever need it.
