My word, this looks like something the good people on Livejournal might care about

So, I've been following the massive group blog at Tor.com since it launched; I don't usually read many of the entries in detail, but it makes for interesting skimming, as everything under the damn sun is blogged about.

For instance, today Jane Lindskold talks a bit about the advantages of the graphic novel ... and uses Fruits Basket as an example ( Read more... )

Eh, since there are still plenty of people, especially in the realm of the written world, who look down on most all forms of visual storytelling (the people who don't think comics can be literature or art, the people who don't watch TV because there's no real or intelligent storytelling being done in that medium etc etc) I hardly think it goes without saying.

@_@

I... I don't even know what to do with that blog post. From the fact that the page they showed of the manga isn't the page she described or she totally segued into the subject of adaptations instead of sticking with her pictures vs. text topic or the fact that she then goes on to discuss style as a quantifier in that topic. (Since apparently live action adapations of manga/anime are not kosher but she doesn't even touch upon the multiple artistic styles in comics.)

I just. *FLAIL* I am flailing ST.

Blogging is /special/, Noel. And I don't think moving from pictures vs. text to adaptations is a /totally/ illogical step, considering how often picking apart an adaptation of anything does boil down to that sort of argument (the movie isn't any good because novels just CAN'T WORK as a visual medium).

(Mostly I just linked it because, dude, Fruits Basket being used as an example of /anything/ in a positive manner on a blog that has people talking about magical realism, the business of Serious Science Fiction Writing, and a whole lot of other stuff that ... isn't where I would expect Fruits Basket to pop up. Really, in that sort of situation, I would have expected them to use /Watchmen/, especially with the movie being something that nerds can't seem to stop talking about.)

I actually had no problem with her bringing up Lord of the Rings because it did reinforce the text versus visual bit. I think what has me flabbergasted is that she talks about the anime adaptions not so much as being moving pictures but focused instead on two series that diverged from the canon sources. She's no longer focused on static picture versus moving picture but instead is off on a tangent there.

Anyways, I should stop otherwise you'll get a whole 'nother paragraph rant about this when 1) you're not the person who wrote it, 2) you're not disagreeing me per se and 3) you linked it for the Furuba pimp.

At the risk of sounding, er, well, sexist, I'd be more inclined to agree with you about Watchmen if the blogger wasn't a woman. :3

... Man, I didn't even /notice/ that. READING COMPREHENSION FOR THE WIN.

It doesn't sound sexist, but I am surprised. Maybe it's because the biggest comic book nerds I know in real life are both ladies who are madly excited about the movie, so the thought that the Watchmen may not be a priori for the ladies doesn't even seem possible in my bubble of ladynerds.
