Books are very cheering ... you know, when they don't suck

May 13, 2008 21:56

Today started by finding cat vomit in front of the bathroom door. Then, Ivan threw up under my computer chair - because he had eaten part of my shoelace and his stomach eventually realized that my shoelace wasn't food. The day really did not improve from this point forward - as work tried to drown me, my computer tried to blow up in several ( Read more... )

Yay. She definitely knows of your existence. I was so nervous on meeitng her that all I talked about was you. She did say hi.

It turns out that I already have that Jane Yolen book. Did I ever send you that omnibus of the White Jenna series?

I wouldn't have thought you would be! With all the Neil Gaiman stalking you do, I would think meeting authors was something you'd be very blaze about by now!

Yes, you did! I ... can't actually see it from here, there's a box in the way. But you did indeed pass it along - that's probably why Sister Light, Sister Dark is floating loose.

I'm afraid the next book, The Keeping Place, will frustrate you even further (if you pick it up), but the book that took ten more years to write, The Stone Key, which I read a couple of months ago, was much better and things HAPPENED and the plot ADVANCE but at least one key person to the story was LEFT OUT Argh. And I think the book was rushed to the printer (why did they bother after 10 years - another proofread would NOT have taken that long) because there were large numbers of errors and people turning up in the wrong spot. But I loved it because I love Isobelle Carmody's books and therefore am willing to put up with the fact that she will never describe Elspeth and Rushton's relationship in DETAIL despite me waiting and waiting. I won't even go into Swallow.

Man, it's /your/ fault I have these books. I knew it!

I don't suppose the book that took her ten years to write managed to /conclude/ things? Or is it more cliffhangerness?

I really wanted to like the books! But they just push so many buttons of things I don't like, along with making what seem to be some pretty easy to avoid mistakes and /so much irritation/, argh.

Darling, of course nothing has been wrapped up. Isobelle Carmody has never yet, in her writing career, finished one, as far as I can see. She should stick to stand alone books from now on, or short stories. If her publishers allow her to start one more series (she has at least three or four on the boil) I will actually go to court, I swear.

I can't help loving the books though - they have been with me for so many years ... so blame me all you want :)

Have you read anything by Tanith Lee? And I have you to thank for introducing to Lois McMaster Bujold by the way. Although I came out of it good unlike you with Carmody ...
