Based on admittedly ten minutes of web-based research, there doesn't seem to be a 'w' sound in Ukrainian/Russian. The 'v' is as close as they get.

Google 'ukrainian surnames' and have a blast. Here's a couple of pages that do okay:
http://www.halgal.com/langofrecord.html
http://www.foreigndocuments.com/a6.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Ukrainian_surnames
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_in_Russian_Empire,_Soviet_Union_and_CIS_countries
http://userweb.ccomm.com/sfpayer/DB/Slavic-Rusyn%20Items.htm

Just be kind of careful, as the Russian language has amusing rules for gendered surnames.

Ooh, Wolyniak just might work. Alternately, I'll just use SEKRIT CODE while writing until I decide on something.

I also misread one of those links as "Names in Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and CSI countries", and spent several seconds feeling sad about the spread of bad American television.
