random apple recipe

I bought myself an apple slicer last week. It's a fantastic little device, really. You just set the thing on top of an apple and push, and you have eight slices and a core. Brilliant. It's perfect for slicing apples to snack on, or for helping to start a rough dice for my newest makeshift recipe ( Read more... )

I'd recommend throwing some oats in there. :-) I think Andrea's mom makes either this recipe or something very similar. It's awesome.

Haha. As I was standing in my kitchen, staring into my cabinets, I contemplated adding oats to the mixture. Now I'll definitely have to next time.

Making up stuff is fun. Especially since it's kinda hard to screw it up when you're baking. Well. I guess it's kinda easy to screw up, too. Heh.

In general, chemistry also involves some chemistry between your ingredients, so I'd say that you can screw it up pretty easily. That said, some things are much less prone to being "screwed up" as a result of experimentation. Just the other day, Karen was talking about Rob making some corn bread. Rob likes to use his own creativity cooking, so baking is a little low on his list. But, I think corn bread is one of those things that certain liberties can be taken. Cakes, yeast raised breads, etc.... well... I don't think those can take quite as much fooling around with their main ingredients.

Of course, cobblers, pies, and the like... I think those are just asking for experimentation. I liked that you said "various varieties" for your apples. Mmmm... that's the best.

For the large apples that won't fit into the slicer, get yourself an apple corer - they're great! It's just this bladed shaft that you center around the core and shove in. Then pull out, push the handle-thing (technical term) down and out pops the core into the trash! I use mine on tomatoes and cucumbers and everything; anything that you want the center cut out of. They also work very well when decorating with apples; cut out the core of an apple and put a taper candle in it. It's festive!

And thanks for the recipe! I'll have to try it and let you know.

I was seriously thinking about getting a corer. Now I'll definitely have to one of these days. Or maybe I can request one from Santa. Thanks for the tip!

I almost forgot... apple slicers are the bomb. :-) I've never personally tried an apple corer, though. With small apples, especially, I just cut them myself with a knife into quarters, actually. Sometimes I don't even remove the core, just the seeds. It's all edible. :-) Not for baking, though. Hahah. ;-)
