Considering the popularity of at least two shows about chess and the (I think even better) one about Go of last year, I bet the title caught readers' eyes. It suggests chess!

That might be possible - and the title isn't just a metaphor. The airship is transporting a grandmaster to a chess tournament in NYC, and he turns out to be a big plot element.
