I read about that in Charles Williams's The Descent of the Dove, a brief but marvelously written history of Christianity. I've been thinking about it lately . . . I've wondered for a long time if it's what's being referred to in the French song that goes Sur le pont d'Avignon, l'on y danse, l'on y danse.

Quite possibly. If it's a folk song, it's completely possible that some of the lyrics have become confused as they were repeated across the generations before being written down.
