Here's another interesting panel discussion topic from this year's WorldconThe idea has its roots in antiquity, in Plato's Cave and the Hindu idea of Maya, "illusion." That's a subject I've been wanting to write about, when time permits. I think the whole supposition is fallacious, for reasons not of physics but of epistemology and logic; but my reasons need to be spelled out carefully. But the whole thing reminds me of René Descartes's evil genius, which I've long thought a specious argument.
