Break (Subaru/Yasu)

Yasu tells Subaru he loves him on a Thursday afternoon. They are shopping together and, somewhere between their seventh second-hand shop and their second serving of takoyaki, Yasu squeezes Subaru’s hand and says “I love you”.
Subaru doesn’t think much of it at first. He squeezes Yasu’s hand back by reflex and adds a swing to their arms.
But Yasu’s face is suddenly serious and unreadable and Subaru doesn’t know what to think anymore. He freezes, eyes wide, hand still holding Yasu’s.
Yasu doesn’t move either for a long moment, staring back. When he finally breaks eye contact, he smiles in a way that makes Subaru’s heart sink a bit.
“Yasu,” he hears himself say, but he doesn’t know what was supposed to come next.
Yasu laughs dryly, blinks back tears and smiles too brightly. “It’s okay. I just wanted you to know.”
Subaru wishes he didn’t know.
