times like these

Feel special everyone. You're hearing about this before even my parents. Then again, considering the subject matierial, you probably won't be surprised. I'm going into the Army. Yep. Mom's pushing me over the edge. All the hypocrisy about dorms being great experiences--she loved having one her first year of college-but saying I shouldn't because I' ( Read more... )

Wow. So many of my friends (and by that, I mean you and Stefan [and Laura R and Breezy, who graduated last year]) are going through with that option.

Whatever you do, as long as it's for you (and not just against your mom), good luck. Keep us posted.

I know. I talked to Stefan about it on the bus yesterday morning. And my boyfriend is in the Reserves. I guess it's just a much more visible option now that we hear about the armed forces everyday. But here's something funny: You know all those yellow "Support Our Troops" magnets you see on every other freaking car? They're made in China.

I too would counsel against joining the military just to spite your mother. Personally, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of anyone joining the military, but I'm not going to impose my set of beliefs on you or anyone else.

I am going to advise you to tell your parents, though. Keeping things like this a secret from your folks never turns out well.

I'm not doing this just to spite my mother. I actually started considering going into the army back in eighth grade, believe it or not. It's just been on the back burner for a while. But I'm scared to tell her because, first of all, she's trained me to just shut up in her presence, and secondly, she has this scary radical side that I'm afraid whould accuse me of helping the Republicans kill the poor, innocent, Iraqi people bladi-bladi-blah. Then again, she'd be a hypocrite to deny me, considering my Dad was in the ROTC during 'nam. It's just one big, confuzzled situation.

Well...that was, how do you say, unexpected? So I guess you ended up taking pretty well to firearms after all. I don't really know what else to say, other than I'm glad you know what you want, and I hope it works out for you. Yay for gender equality!

Ka. I am so sad that we don't get to see each other every day. I want to know how you're doing at the U? I am so proud of you for deciding on this all on your own and not letting others talk you into joining. You are an amazing person and I know you will do well in all you do. I just hope to the higher powers that be that you and stefan don't get sent to war in some god forsaken part of the world. I truly hope that doesn't come to be and that when you are done serving you are able to come back to college and truly make something more amazing of yourself. More power to you and keep in touch. Lets see if our schedules match up at all for next semester at the U (if you are staying in PSEO) so we can do lunch or go to the gym or something. Much love in your general direction.
peace
