Cait asked me today why I never update. I think I'm just boring. Seriously. What do I do everyday? Get up, go to class, to to work, eat, do homework. Somedays the order varies, but that's about the extent of my week. However, I'll attempt to write something meaningful, despite being in a horrible mood ( Read more... )

What's wrong with your camera?

I posted some of the "painting with light" over here: http://www.tapdig.com/gallery/ go to Music, Opolis, 1/19/04 album.

I just don't like my lens. There is nothing physically wrong with the camera. We're not allowed to use flash, and are required to leave the zoom set to 50mm. My lens only opens up to f4.5 on that setting, meaning that 90% of the pictures come out too dark. I really don't want to reduce the shutter speed and have to carry around a tripod everywhere, but I don't have much of a choice.

The pictures look awesome... you definitely got a lot more color in them by having the shutter open so long and the streaks add some interesting lines to the pictures. For the most part, I like the copies of the pictures - the altered ones - the contrast helps bring out the focus of the picture better. I always have to increase the contrast on my picutures, the lighting at the shows I go to is usually hell.

Most pawn shops will have 50mm prime lenses. Finding one to fit your camera is the hard part. 50mm always are fast, at least under f2.0. I think it's the most common lens ever made. I shot a Canon AE-1 for about 15 years. 95% of those pics were with the 50. Since I got the Canon D30, I only own one lens for it, a 50. I opted for the more expensive f1.4 over the f1.8.

Rather than reducing shutter speed, tripod, can you find better lighting? Take your shots during the day? Do them outside? Turn on a lamp? I miss BW film. I'd recommend the Ilford HP5, or I am always a fan of TriX. Maybe instead of a lens to fix your problems, try some TMZ3200 at 800 or 1600.

Going to pawn shops is a good idea, thanks. I have a Pentax ZX-L, and I haven't been able to find any cheap lenses online.... Maybe you can answer this question... do other manufacturer's lenses often fit? Or are there drastic differences in lens size? I haven't been able to find much online about what lenses fit my camera...

I've tried lamps and better lighting... it's still too dark for some reason. Outside works as long as I'm not in shadow, but with the snow and cold, I just cannot stay outside for that long.

I'm using the Ilford film (I love B&W too), and we're required to have 400 speed film, which is another problem I'm having. I normally shoot digital, and aside from being able to photoshop pictures if they're too dark, I can set my ISO to 800 or 1600 with just a push of the button. I realize that 400 produces better quality pictures, but I just don't like it.

Oh, psht, you aren't boring. Your life is what you make it right? I just take the relative boringness of high school and turn it into drama = ) Plus, I'm uh...completely uninhibited about sharing ALL my feelings, unlike a lot of people.

Hahaha... I'll start looking in my life for somethings I can turn dramatic. I'm sure I've said this before, but I envy your ability to be completely uninhibitied. It's just something I cannot do... but I'll try to work on it a little bit =O)
