title: broken promise
pairing: woohyun/sungyeol
description: it hurts to see you smile like that because I know you're hurting inside
note: I had an idea for this...and then I forgot some of it but still wanted to write it...so this came out. :/ Oh and I suck at titles omg
Sungyeol loves that they’re more popular now, loves that there are more fans, loves that they’re finally getting recognition, but sometimes he wishes he could just turn back the time because things weren’t as real before they debuted.
He misses the way they all joked around about who would be the most popular, who everyone would hate, and who would mess up on their first stage. Debuting was still a dream then; they knew it was going to happen but the meaning of it had not sunk in yet. And while everyone was sleeping, Sungyeol would take Woohyun’s hand and sneak out, most of time just to the top of their dorm.
He still remembers that one day in April, two months before the world got too real. It was late and the other members were asleep already, but Woohyun and Sungyeol were together on the rooftop, hand loosely linked together, watching the stars.
“Hyung?” Sungyeol turned to Woohyun.
“Hmm?”
“Can you promise me something?”
“Depends on what it is.”
“Can you promise me that you’ll never let yourself hurt in front of me?”
Woohyun stared at him. He wasn’t really sure what the younger boy meant, but considering Sungyeol, it was probably just something weird that he thought of. “I promise, Sungyeol.”
Sungyeol squeezed his hand. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Woohyun said confidently before gently pressing his lips to Sungyeol’s. Sungyeol responded with an intensity he hadn’t expected, as if branding the promise onto his lips.
“I love you, you know,” Sungyeol breathed.
“Of course.”
---
More than a year later, the two were lying in the same position on the rooftop three days before they would have their first fanclub inauguration event.
“You really shouldn’t be out here. You’re sick.”
“Sungyeol-ah. Don’t worry about me.”
“Woohyun, you’ve been feeling like shit. We can all tell, we all know.”
“I’m fine. Even if I am sick, the fan inauguration is in three days, and I can’t miss that.”
“Your fever though. You can’t sing and dance like that.”
Woohyun didn’t respond, and Sungyeol let the silence be.
---
Sungyeol got up on the day of fan inauguration event, and the first thing he did was go check on Woohyun.
When he walked into Woohyun and Sunggyu’s room, he knew the fever hadn’t gone down. There were bags under Woohyun’s eyes and his face was pale. It was obvious that he was exhausted and in no condition to go anywhere that day.
“I told Jungryul hyung that I want to go to the hospital. I’ll get an IV, and I’ll be okay for the day,” Woohyun said before Sungyeol could open his mouth.
“Woohyun.” Sungyeol stared straight into the older boy’s eyes, and his heart broke at the agony that was in those eyes.
“Woohyun. Don’t go.”
“Sungyeol-ah. I have to,” Woohyun said.
Sungyeol grabbed Woohyun’s hand and pulled him in for a fiery, desperate kiss, pushing everything that he couldn’t say into that kiss.
“I’m sick,” Woohyun whispered. “You shouldn’t do that.”
Sungyeol just stared at him, begging him not to do this to himself or to him.
Don’t do this. Stay home. You know, it hurts more to see you in pain than if I’m hurt myself. You’re everything to me, Nam Woohyun, and I don’t want to see you like this.
“I’m sorry.”
---
A beautiful smile graced Woohyun’s face as he sang, but Sungyeol just wanted to cry. It kills me to see you smiling like this because I know you’re hurting inside, he thought.
The members surprised him with a cake to celebrate his birthday early, and he cried. They all thought it was because of what they did, but in reality he was crying for Woohyun, crying for the one he’d fallen in love with two years ago, the one who was letting himself hurt in front of him...
You promised you would never let yourself hurt in front of me, don’t you remember? The stars were there; they know. You promised the stars, and you promised me, but now you’ve broken it, you’ve broken my heart.
