At first I was thinking USB power supply problem since I have similar problems with plugging in a HD on the desktop which works fine, but having the thing not working when I plug it into the laptop, but since yours is actually showing up but just an unknown drive... uh... There might be some HD error on the external? Back up all the data and run a diagnosis on it.

As for feeling geeky.... see this? That's 2 laptops and a desktop all at the same time. So you're in good company. ;)

Super geek! :)

Yeah, I'm ever so slowly transferring the files across to one of the other drives now. Since my old computer has to do it, it's gonna take a while. THIS computer... omg super fast. I think I'm gonna like this a LOT! Eeeeee \o/

Thanks! :)

Windows 7? I've heard a lot of people are having this problem. Possible solution is to go to your device manager and uninstall the external hard drive. Plug the drive's USB cable back in and see if it recognizes it. Another possibility is assigning a drive letter.

It seems to be a problem with the WIN7 plug&play. You could also try turning off autoplay for media/devices.
