~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a little nervous when posting this because it's the very first fic written in this fandom and also my first fic posted here. But I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it :D.
I owe a huge 'thank you' to silk_mistress for helping at the beginning and kathkin for agreeing to help in a hort period of time (thank you both very much! <3).
Also, I will highly recommend that you listen to the song Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy before or during reading the fic since this song has inspired me a lot to write it and in a way it's a base to this fanfic.
You can do it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwvjTRGFU3o&feature=related.
All comments are very welcomed and I'd love to hear what you think about it and would greatly appreciate it ♥.
Fields of Gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
He remembered the first time they met there. They were both nine and it was only Morgana's second day in Camelot. Since she had arrived, Morgana hadn't said a word to anyone, but no-one minded, for they all knew what she’d been through.
So when Arthur met her among the fields of barley behind the castle that early morning, when the sun barely had time to rise, he wasn't sure what to do. She stood among golden ears, up to her shoulders, and looked at the mere shadows of mountains in the distance.
Arthur didn't move. He didn't want to scare her, she seemed so lost in thoughts; almost too much for a nine year old girl. He tried to remain as still as possible, yet Morgana somehow felt his presence and turned around, her blue eyes full of uncertainty. But when she recognized Arthur she relaxed. She looked down at her fingers, gently brushing the thin stalks of the barley, and for the first time, Arthur heard her voice.
“It's so peaceful here. I can forget about the whole world.”
About the whole world. About her father's death. About the fact that she was alone in this world. She didn't say it out loud, but Arthur knew what was hidden behind those words. He came a little closer, stepping into the barley, his innocent eyes never leaving hers.
“I promise you, you will never be alone again.” He came still closer, taking her small hand in his and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
Ever since then, it was no longer an ordinary field of barley but their place to meet and hide from the world.
So she took her love for to gaze awhile
Among the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
Since that first morning they met there many times. Even nine years later, when they were both eighteen, and already seen as noble young adults by the rest of the court, they still met out in the field.
The sun was already high in the sky, embracing everything with it’s warm rays. It was almost midday. Arthur had left his training early, and Morgana had had to slip out of her etiquette lesson, but they were used to that every once in a while. By now they had perfected it, so that no-one ever guessed where they were.
They ran down the hill to find their special place. Morgana clutched his hand tightly and a few strands of her long raven hair escaped her neat bun and flew around her face like a halo. She laughed, dragging him behind her, and it seemed there was no sound more beautiful than her laughter, ringing like thousands of little silver bells.
Once they got to the bottom of the hill, she knelt and lay on the ground, spreading her arms among the tall barley. Arthur gazed down at her, admiring the sight as golden rays of sunshine danced on her porcelain skin and closed eyelids. She took a deep breath revelling in this temporary freedom.
When he didn’t lie down beside her she sat up and tugged at his hand.
“Come one, silly!” she said, pulling him down to the ground. Arthur lay down on his back, and she crawled under his arm, resting her head on his chest.
“You know, when we're here I feel so powerful. So free, like I could do anything,” she said, tracing circles on the red shirt he was wearing with her fingers. “I feel like I can forget about all this - that in a few years you'll become a king and Uther will have me married to some hideous old Duke.”
When he didn't say anything, she looked up at his face. His eyes were closed and his expression was so perfectly still that Morgana would almost have thought he was asleep if he hadn't been rubbing her shoulder with one hand.
“Arthur? Have you ever thought about the future?” she asked, still looking at his face.
After a while, Arthur slowly opened his eyes and looked at Morgana. In moments like these she was at her most beautiful - with almost all of her hair down, shining eyes and skin glistening as if covered with golden dust. When he spoke, he fixed his eyes on hers.
“I don't care what the future brings, as long as you’re in my arms.”
Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
As you lie in fields of gold
But neither of them knew what fate was going to put them through. And there he was, many years later, the one and only King of Camelot, even mightier than his father, with his kind-hearted wife and faithful people under his command.
Then why did he feel as if a piece of his heart has been torn out when he lay among those fields of barley and gazed at the sun slowly setting, drowning everything in pink light?
She had left years ago, disappeared over the horizon in these very fields. He still remembered how she looked at him when they bade farewell among these golden fields.
Her eyes were full of tears, but her lips formed a smile, trying to show him that everything would be alright. She told him that she had to leave, for the sake of Camelot, for the sake of them both, and that one day he would understand. And she promised that before their time on earth will end, she would be back, and once again they would lie on the ground in their secret place and forget about everything but each other.
So he hid her words deep in his heart, and kept coming here, day after day, evening after evening, searching in the distance for her slender silhouette until the sun set and the twilight bathed those - their fields of gold in a dim light...
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We will walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sky in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold...
