Thursday really could have been disastrous. After Wednesday night's bad news (go back one entry for the details) it would have been very easy and I suppose even justified for me and my wife to get into some emo version of real estate depression. If more couples went candle shopping, we'd have a much lower divorce rate. Sal and I frequently hit Hallmark and test out the new scents. It's really fun too, because you do end up finding that common ground that you didn't know existed. In some ways, smell is a more evocative sense than sight or sound, and I think we all bring our conceptions to the different scents we encounter. I try to picture my Mom and Dad going shopping for candles, and I simply can't do it. But I know if they did, they might have a better relationship. So much of what makes something big like a marriage work is the little things. I've never seen my parents pay much attention to those things. It's those little things, those tiny gestures and small moments of connection that keep the whole thing humming. I think most relationships run afoul simply because the two people forget to connect on some basic simple level. Everything becomes so big, and the big things overshadow the simple pleasures, like candle shopping, or going for a walk and smelling the ( ... )
