Nov 01, 2007 07:15

Well, since my initial call out for November's edition of Soundtrack solicited all of 3 suggestions, I think I might want to try a different approach ( Read more... )

Man, I hate to be first, but here goes:
1. It is 12:30 AM and you're at a pretty wild party and/or club. You're not tired. What song is playing on the PA/stereo?
- Let's get it started - Black Eyed Peas

2. You're driving in a city. The streets are bare for the most part. It is just past 3AM. The DJ on the radio -- as if having crawled into your head -- begins to play the perfect song for that moment. What is it?
Suite Sister Mary - Queensryche

3. It is 1AM and you're in a bar... mostly people watching. Who do you see? What song (or songs) would describe them?
I love this bar - Toby Keith

4. It is about 10 minutes until 6AM. You've been up all night (for whatever reasons) and now you're going to crash. What is the last song playing on the radio (or in your head) as you get ready to put head to pillow?
Up all Night - Boomtown Rats

There, a little bit of everything, pop, metal, country and 80's New Wave (after 20 years, is it still "new"?)

Good suggestions, though I may need to shy away from the Queensryche track. I love that song, love that album, but a 10 minute epic in the midst of my 79-minute format eats up a lot of time. :)

1. Nightrain ~ GNR

2. Small Town Girl ~ Journey

3. Back 2 Good ~ Matchbox Twenty

4. Ok, the scary thing is that you just described, down to the time even, last Friday for me. Have you been spying? Anyway, just before crashing into bed I pushed "play" on my bedroom stereo, inside which was my "go to sleep, Sara" mix cd that a friend made for me a couple years ago. The first track, and the last one I heard before falling asleep, is "A Lifetime" by Better Than Ezra.

5. Hmmmm, I know I already suggested a Copeland song, but I have to mention one more. It's called "Sleep." Check out the lyrics, or better yet, listen to it.

Here you go. What follows are 18 songs that correspond to 18 events that happen to 18 different people/pairs of people/groups of people in one small town during one overnight. These events happen in bars, diners, bedrooms and streets of the same town during one overnight. I've got explanations in my head for many of these, but I'm not going to include them here. I'd be happy to give you more details though ( ... )

WOW!

You went all out. I'll see what I can do with these.

My frame of mind right now (for whatever reason) is kind of "dark" so who knows?

Thanks, Rich.

  1. It is 12:30 AM and you're at a pretty wild party and/or club. You're not tired. What song is playing on the PA/stereo? Since I don't normally find myself at wild parties or clubs, I'll toss in a couple of songs that my wife has told me they still play in the clubs that she and her girlfriends go to on a monthly basis and one that I've been known to dance around the house too.
    • Usher "Yeah!"
    • Rihanna "Umbrella"
    • the Coup "My Favorite Mutiny"
  2. You're driving in a city. The streets are bare for the most part. It is just past 3AM. The DJ on the radio -- as if having crawled into your head -- begins to play the perfect song for that moment. What is it? I have found myself on a bare city street in the wee hours of the night. There are a couple of songs that - to me anyway - are perfect late night driving songs.
    • R.E.M. "Strange Currencies"
    • Coldplay "Clocks"
    • Ryan Adams "Burning Photographs"
    • Gomez "See the World"
  3. It is 1AM and you're in a bar... mostly people watching. Who do you see? What song (or songs) would describe them? When I do happen to find ( ... )

Some great suggestions here. Don't know how many I'll use, as I'm still sorting out whether it should be a more random mix or more of a narrative, lyrically literal mix. I'm leaning toward the latter.

At this early point in the process I'm hoping to create something that has a frame-by-frame feel to it... almost like you're watching from above at times and that at other times zeroing in on people.

Anyway... thanks for the suggestions.

They are. Thanks.

Oh... and if you love Jude, I assume you've already heard The Low Stars (his side project/band)? If you haven't, you MUST. :)

Ah yes! But only through his website. I must be the last person in an industrialized country not to own a MP3 player. lol
