Seeking Bookshelf Stereo Buying Advice

My parents' bookshelf stereo got fried by a thunderstorm 2 months ago, so I'm trying to find them a replacement for Christmas.  It needs to have reasonable-for-under-$200 sound quality & good volume. (They're both getting deaf.)  They still play some of their old tapes, so a cassette deck would be useful.  And it needs to be pretty simple to use, ( Read more... )

I have 3 of these Billy shelves and 3 of these. I've had the former for about 10 years, and the latter for about 3 months. I'm equally happy with both. The first ones have moved with me many times for years, and have held up great. The newer ones are deep-shelved enough to hold hardbacks two deep. The older, shallower ones, hold hardbacks with room for a metronome in front, or paperbacks two deep.

You may have trouble finding one with a cassette player as they are a thing of the past. I still have one but it is in a box and has not been used. What we use is an iPhone or iPod docking station and my wife has all our CD's on her iPod. Sounds pretty good as well and can hold your entire library of music.

That's what we do, & of course I thought of giving them an iPod. But they simply couldn't grok it & it would just sit around unused.

I did actually see several models with cassette decks, but that was at Target where I couldn't try them.

Urban Outfitters frequently has odd and retro audio items which, despite appearances, have modern electronics.

Have you looked at pawn shops or thrift stores? As others have noted, cassettes are very much a thing of the past. Sorry, I don't have any brands to suggest.

I thought of that as a last resort, but it'd be very time-consuming. Thanks.

And there are still models with cassette decks out there,

I can find lots of places to buy online, but to be sure it's a good choice for my folks I really want to hear the unit & test the controls. Thanks.
