"IMO cats are what women aspire to be: smart, graceful, strong, independent, beautiful, etc. I tell all female friends and family to run (don't walk) away from any man who hates cats."

While I agree to a point, I could never date anyone who disliked just about ANY animal. I find it hard to understand people who blatantly hate dogs, cats, birds, rodents, etc, without any genuine justification (ie allergies). To me, I find that similar to racism, not that I am trying to lessen the horrors of racism, but I just don't get it. I find it incredibly narrow minded to hear that, because there are wonderful pets in every category.

It's one thing to say "I'm not fond of cats because I prefer an animal that likes to go for walks" but to just say "I hate cats period, they're awful animals" and not be able to listen to reason and admit that they have some merits as pets for other people is just dogmatic and close-minded. For me, any kind of extreme/dogmatic opinion is a huuuuge deal breaker.

Basically put, I don't date guys that dislike animals. Period. But the cats thing totally rings true ;)

My ex-wife's cat Oreo (in the icon) was her barometer for finding good guys. Oreo was afraid of me at first, but soon grew to like me. He passed away in 2004, and I still miss him.

I dislike dogs, and I really don't know why. Childhood fears of the badly-socialized German shepherd next door, I think. It was known to have bitten the mailman in the past.

But I fully acknowledge that on technical points, dogs are better companions than cats. They have many virtues. It's just ... they're just not for me. They make me stressed and nervous.

It's not a prejudice -- I don't believe bad things about dogs, or think people shouldn't have them -- but I don't know if it rises to the dignity of a phobia.
